The first East African photographic safaris began in Tanzania in the 1930's. White hunter Ray Ulyate, a contemporary of Danny McCallum's father, was a pioneer in encouraging the shift from shooting game with a rifle to shooting it with a camera. He engineered close-ups of lions with daredevil stunts using meat to draw the big cats closer to vehicles.
Although guiding practices have become less flamboyant, the remoteness and sheer adventure of those first expeditions has stayed the same. With Danny McCallum Safaris, Tanzania reveals the best of herself. As an operator in the business for almost forty years, Danny has made a reputation for himself as the ultimate safari outfitter and a congenial host. Whether bushwhacking in the Ruaha or fly camping in the Selous, a Danny McCallum safari is more than just an expedition under canvas - it is the adventure of a lifetime.
For those of you who may wish to relax for a few days before or after your hunting safari we would suggest a visit to some of Tanzania’s scenic National Parks and Conservation Areas which offer excellent accommodations in some of the finest game viewing areas in Africa. A visit to Zanzibar or one of the coastal resorts can also be arranged. In addition we offer exclusive photographic safaris in Tanzania either using our luxury mobile tented camps or some of Tanzania’s best game lodges and permanent tented camps in National Parks and Conservation Areas.
